In the early twentieth century, racism was widespread in America. Black artists could only perform in clubs to all - white audiences. One of those black artists decided to take a stand against injustice. Billie Holiday, known as Lady Day, recorded Strange Fruit in 1939. This song is a protest against racial hatred in the USA and by recording such a 9ong at that time, Billie risked her career. In fact, it had just the opposite effect.

Eleanora Fagan was born in 1915, the daughter of a 13 - year - old mother and the grandchild of a black slave from Virginia. She fell in love with jazz when she heard the music of Louis Armstrong while cleaning floors for a living as a young girl.

She made her professional singing debut in little known New York nightclubs where she was vocalist in a band. It was at this time that she adopted the stage name Billie Holiday after her movie star idol Billie Dove. She went on to perform alongside some of America’s top musicians before embarking on a solo career.

Billie Holiday became a legend in her short lifetime-she died in 1959, aged only 44. Her unique voice made her the outstanding jazz singer of her day. She had an unforgettable voice, full of depth and sadness, which was nourished (滋养) by a lifetime of hardship and a background of racism. No singer has ever conveyed despair with such force. She sang with so much emotion that she was able to convey her feelings to her audience.

In today’s global world, more and more people travel to foreign countries. Cross cultural awareness and an understanding of foreign etiquette is important if you want to succeed as an international business person. Behaviour that is polite at home may be considered rude in another country. In particular, by learning about dining etiquette and table manners, you can avoid offending people and this can directly influence your business success.

John Smith’s book The Perfect Guest is a goldmine of information for the globe - trotting business person. There are chapters dedicated to all the main problem areas of dining etiquette and entertaining in different countries and tips on how to cope with embarrassing situations.

These are some of the areas which are covered in the book.

Seating arrangements

Whether you are eating at a restaurant or at someone’s home, there may be a fixed protocol of who sits where. Do men and women sit together? Is there a hierarchy according to age or status? Rules vary greatly. For example, in Korea, it is customary to offer the best seat to the most senior person; in the US, there are no specific seating rules. If you don’t know where to sit, wait until your host shows you.

Conversation

Is the dining table the right place to have a conversation or is the meal taken in silence? In France, for instance, the meal is a social affair with loud animated conversations and most topics are acceptable, including business. In Japan or Vietnam, on the other hand, only quiet conversation is acceptable and business is never conducted at the dinner table.

Food

What type of food is popular? Is it polite to remark on the food? Should you eat everything or leave some food on your plate? Is it polite to ask for the salt and pepper if it isn’t on the table? And how can you deal with a food delicacy that you find disgusting? In Europe, it is polite to eat everything on your plate whereas this would be considered rude in Egypt. If you clean your plate, it will be filled up again immediately.

Teaching Poetry

No poem should ever be discussed or “analysed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analysing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to communicate this to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

NASA, the U. S. space agency, believes there’s a good chance that we’re not alone in the universe. Last fall, NASA began a new project called the High Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS). Its aim is to find evidence of life in one of the billions of galaxies in the universe.

The search for intelligent life on other planets isn’t new. It began almost 100 years ago. That’s when scientists built a huge transmitter (发射机) to send radio waves into space. Scientists thought smart intelligent beings on other planets might pick up the signals.

Scientists have also sent a message about humans and our solar system to a nearby constellation (星座). But because the constellation is 25,000 light years away, a return message wouldn’t reach the earth for 50,000 years! So don’t wait up for an answer.

So far, no extraterrestrial (境外的) beings that we know of have returned our “calls”. But according to Dr Jill Tarter, an HRMS scientist, we haven’t exactly had our ears wide open. “Now, however,” says Dr Tarter, “we’ve built the tools we need to listen well.”

Last October, Dr Tarter switched on the largest radio receiver in the world. It’s an enormous metal bowl stretching 1,000 feet across a valley in Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, another NASA scientist turned on a huge radio receiver in California’s Mojave Desert. NASA hopes these big dishes and others around the world will pick up radio signals from a new world.

Dr Frank Drake has been searching for life in outer space for years. He explains the HRMS project this way: To listen to your radio, you move the tuner on the dial until the channels come in loud and clear. Now imagine radio receivers that scan our galaxy “listening” to 14 million channels every second. That’s what NASA’s radio receivers in Puerto Rico and California are doing.

But that’s not all. Powerful computers hooked to the receivers examine every signal carefully. The computers try to match the signals to ones that scientists already recognise, such as human-made signals. If they can’t, Drake and Tarter check on them. “It could prove there is radio technology elsewhere in the universe,” says Dr Tarter. “And that would mean we’re not alone.”
