Stephen Hawking, the brightest star in science, whose insights shaped modern cosmology and inspired global audiences in the millions, has died aged 76. We asked our readers to tell us the impact Stephen Hawking had on their lives.
Heather Wolf
After breaking my neck. I was terrified of my future. I often thought of Hawking, loving life and producing extraordinary works of genius in physics from a wheelchair. Knowing he existed drove me to endure pain and physical limitations because he showed with his life and with his actions that life is absolutely precious and that the scope of it is bounded only by our will and imagination.
Alexander McQueen:
For the majority of my life I have struggled with mental illness. I had depression from a very early age, and attempted to commit suicide on a number of occasions in my darkest moments. It was then that I read Hawking’s quote. “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. And however difficult life my seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up. "These words coming from a man who was suffering from such a painful illness seemed a very powerful message to me. I will be forever grateful to Hawking for uttering those words and sparking off the journey that helped me to come to terms with myself.
Silvia Mallaschitz:
I discovered his books at a time when I had no real interests or direction in life. The fascination with physics and the universe his books set off made me realize how much I truly don’t know. He was really the one who sparked my interest in studying physics on my own. His approach to making the general readers easily understand even difficult topics with a lot of humour was amazing. Science needs more of such popular stars like him. The universe is a darker place without him.
24. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Stephen Hawking’s impact on popular science.
B. Stephen Hawking’s struggle against his disease.
C. Stephen Hawking’s influence on readers' lives.
D. Readers' reaction to Stephen Hawking’ s death.

A. He was probably restricted to a wheelchair.
B. He was to blame for his injury in his neck.
C. He suffered depression from a very early age.
D. He took interest in studying physics on his own.
26. How did Alexander McQueen feel just before he read Hawking’s quote?
A. He felt very annoyed B. He felt very desperate
C. He felt very confused D. He felt very delighted
27. According to Silvia Mallaschitz, Stephen Hawking’s books are______________.
A. abstract B. conventional C . accessible D. controversial

Over the summer, employees at a Japanese marketing firm noticed that not all of their colleagues were working the same number of hours.
Smokers at the company, Piala, stepped away from their desks for cigarette breaks. Despite the time the smokers were away from work, everyone left the office at the same time. Non-smokers at the agency complained about the unfairness to the chief executive, whose response in September has drawn nationwide attention. Employees at Piala who did not smoke, the company announced, would be rewarded with up to six additional vacation days a year.
"I hope to encourage employees to quit smoking through motivation rather than penalties," Takao Asuka, the company's chief executive said.

A possible version:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am pleased to learn about your appeal to spend a Saturday without using smart phones. I’m very glad to join in the activity. Smart phones are playing an important role nowadays, making it easier for us to communicate and deal with work. But at the same time, we seem to be losing the skills of face-to-face communication.
My plans for this Saturday are as follows. After getting up, I would like to invite my friends to go for a morning run in the park. It is a good idea to help my parents prepare a big meal at noon, after which my family will spend the whole afternoon enjoying the latest movie together. In the evening, we will stay at home, reading books.
It is really a meaningful activity, so I am eager to call on more people around me to participate in the activity.
Yours,
Li Hua
